What Are Fuyu Persimmons?

I had actually never eaten a persimmon until I moved to New York back in 2014.

I don't even think I'd ever seen one until the Asian Mart across my street started selling them.

If you've never tried a persimmon, you really need to!

While there are a number of different varieties of persimmons, however I recommend using Fuyu persimmons in this recipe.

Fuyu persimmons are short and wide and have a similar texture to apples, but are slightly creamier.

If you're eating them on their own you can either eat them as you would an apple or peel and cut them.

Apples and fuyu persimmons pair beautifully in this recipe and give this crockpot applesauce such a unique and vibrant orange color!

What are the Best Apples for Homemade Applesauce?

You can really use whatever apples you desire when making homemade applesauce.

Some options are listed below:

  • Gala
  • Fuji
  • Mcintosh
  • Golden Delicious
  • Jonathan

I recommend using the apples that you enjoy eating the most on their own.

Personally, I love Fuji Apples! So that is the variety of apple I used in this recipe.

How to Make Crockpot Applesauce

It's so easy to make crockpot applesauce and you don't even need to add any sugar!

The apples, and persimmons in this case, are sweet enough on their own!

To make crockpot applesauce, start by peeling, coring and thinly slicing the apples and, if using, persimmons.

Place the fruit in your crockpot and add in the lemon juice, vanilla extract and water.

Cover the crockpot and set the temperature to high. Let everything cook for 3-6 hours, depending on the strength of your crockpot!

If you have a stronger crockpot, be sure to check the fruit after 3 hours to keep it from burning.

Once the fruit has become super sweet and soft, mash the fruit with a potato masher until it reaches your desired consistency.

For a completely smooth homemade applesauce, you can also puree the applesauce with an immersion blender.
